Today he is one of the best in the world. Esch cannot forget his first photo-book: an architectural guide to Düsseldorf that marked the beginning of his own, individual work and the start of his career. The dialogue with colleagues, which had proven too taxing during his period as a fashion photographer, could now be sought with space. And for that he needed to keep to himself: 'An architectural photographer is a lone wolf,' Esch realized, even though the man without his camera has more of the cheery air of the Rhineland locals. But everything changes the moment he picks up his camera: 'I need peace and concentration in order to photograph, in order to feel my way into every new place and object, to find the right angle and capture its unique quality.'The biggest challenge for HGEsch is depicting a three-dimensional space on a flat surface. In addition to this, he does not want to document but to interpret. Even in the mid to late 1980s, when documentation based on the center perspective was all therage, Esch sought something else, and that has not changed to this day.
