Architecture schools are currently being built all over the world. The main reasons for this lie in new space requirements and the pursuit of excellence in education. Despite the claim of many institutions to convey concepts for a new, innovative architecture, when building their own facilities, schools are often bound to strict conditions and given space allocation plans. Under these conditions, how can free space for architectural training be created and forward-looking ideas and unconventional uses promoted? The third Lucerne Symposium pursued this question by examining the real spaces in which architects are trained. The dialogues and essays compiled in this volume discuss what future teaching institutes could look like and whether a school still has to consist of buildings at all. The result is a polyphonic intercultural exchange that collects contemporary and visionary ideas for architecture schools in the age of global pandemics and digital teaching.
