The German architect Rudolf Schwarz (1897 - 1961) numbers among the leading masters of church architecture in the 20th century. Inspired by the Catholic Youth Movement, he has designed over 40 religious buildings since 1924. His oeuvre includes numerous new buildings as well as alterations and renovations. In addition, he has made a name for himself as the author of fundamental texts on sacred architecture. T his publication documents his trend - setting sacred buildings in Germany and Austria that have retained their magnetic attraction till today. The renowned Munich architecture photographer Klaus Kinold has repeatedly and intensively engaged with the churches by Rudolf Schwarz. This bilingual publication not only introduces the renewer of C atholic church architecture, but also presents his close cooperation with visual artists, among them Ewald Matare and Georg Meistermann. Mies van der Rohe was not the only one to praise the architect: "Rudolf Schwarz was a thinking architect, and architect ure was for him a designed order full of meaning."
