Vincenzo Scamozzi (1548-1616) was one of Northern Italy's leading architects during the final decades of the 16th and 17th century. His strictly organised approach to the principles of architecture resulted in his own personal interpretation of ancient classical architecture and his treatise 'L'Idea della Architettura'. This thesis eventually became the influential handbook for classical architecture throughout Europe. This English translation of book III, Villas and Country Estates, is beautifully printed and illustrated by photographs and sketches of Scamozzi's own buildings. The introductory essay places Scamozzi, his buildings and his book in historical context.
