Russian artist Alexander Mikhailovich Rodchenko will be a more familiar name, but for designers, the 'Design book, concentrating largely on Rodchenko's graphic work in the form of book jackets, posters and advertising, offers a focused and informative addition to the existing works about the artist who was a central figure in the Russian Constructivist and Futurist art movements; a radical activist, a pioneer of photomontage, a theorist, and a teacher; versatility is to the fore here, and in this, Rodchenko shares much with Gentleman. And what both books do, clearly and compellingly, is show clearly that good design never becomes antiquated, even if they are published by a little outfit with an old-fashioned website called the Antique Collectors Club.
