The Rietveld Shcroder House, situated in a quiet, respectable district in the city of Utrecht, is one of the high points of twentieth- century architecture. Gerrit Rietveld built the house in 1924. It was his first architectural creation and would prove to be the key work for his entire oeuvre. The ideas of the Dutch avant- garde movement De Stijl were realized in this house, which was to exert a permanent influence on the development of modern architecture.
