This substantial compilation features more than 150 cartoons and illustrations in book and digital formats by Mexico's greatest printmakers during the period 1890-1915. He is chiefly remembered for his etchings on zinc for the free political leaflets and broadsides that were distributed among the lower classes of Mexico City. The works of Jose Guadalupe Posada are often compared to those of the French artist Honore Daumier because of their preoccupation with political strife and class warfare. Posada is particularly noted for his calaveras ' satirical interpretations of the skeletons associated with Mexico's Catholic holiday, Día del los Muertos (Day of the Dead) ' many of which appear throughout this compilation.
