This book provides a very good overview of Ingo Mauer's work and its importance in contemporary art and design. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum, it is far more than an exhibition catalog. In the introductory essay, Jocen Eisenbrand briefly describes the halogen and LED technologies that have allowed Mauer to create the minimalist and flexible light fixtures for which he is known, and goes on to describe the trajectory of Mauer's career thus far, highlighting important works and their significance. He also examines Mauer's design aesthetic, influences on his work, his firm, and his design process. Maria Claudia Clemente approaches Mauer's work from an art criticism perspective in her essay, exploring the nature of form, figure and space in his works. Deyon Sudjic's essay places Mauer in the context of the German and European design field, comparing him to other designers such as Dieter Rams. Following these three essays is a section of "tributes", ranging from a few sentences to several paragraphs and even poems, by other artists and designers. The book concludes with a biography of Mauer in the form of a timeline. Also included are an index, a list of designers currently working at Mauer's firm, and photographs of the Vitra exhibit. High-quality, full-color photographs throughout illustrate Mauer's artwork, light installations, and light fixtures and round out the parallel German/English text. Recommended for art and design collections.
