After the end of the First World War, the British architect Sir Edwin Luytens designed 140 cemeteries for fallen soldiers throughout the landscapes of Flanders and Northern France. Each graveyard was designed according to a number of fixed principles, such as a uniform gravestone, a large altar and cross. The cemeteries form not only a map of where heavy fighting took place, but also differ dramatically from each other dependent on size, location, design, materials and plantings. This richly illustrated book examines the development of the designs and the underlying principles of order and variation found in the architecture. All 140 cemeteries are generously documented with specific visiting addresses and directions
