Thomas Karsten (1884-1945) was one of a small group of modern Dutch architects who developed their careers in the Dutch East Indies in the first half of the 20th century. Karsten and his contemporaries laid the foundations of modern urban Indonesia, but his work to date has regrettably not received the international prominence it deserves.
