GROSSE: KATHARINA GROSSE. SHADOWBOX

Katharina Grosse's work is characterized by an anarchic impulse. Since the beginning of the 1990s, she has been working on a pictorial form that disregards fixed boundaries and hierarchies. For the Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin, Grosse has created a new group of works. The title of the show, "shadowbox", gives rise to multilayered associations: from shadowboxing, to a kind of negative form of the white cube, all the way to the display.
Katharina Grosse has created a new set of works for the Temporäre Kunsthalle. Grosses installation views, which are presented in the catalogue, form a new pictorial ground in the form of a huge concave ellipse. Functions and qualities of architecture, sculpture and painting are taken on and brought together in the four objects. The curved surfaces are cut outs and perforations of the original, the basic geometric shape crossing into the surrounding space. By painting the front side of these shapes, Grosse develops an illusionistic pictorial space, which deviates from the factuality of its carrier. The painting reaches out well beyond its borders and frees itself from the concrete spatial conditions of the exhibition hall.
