De Chirico's early work can be divided into distinct phases, styles, subjects, iconography and poetic themes, which allows each volume to be effectively a monograph that stands up in its own right. Volume one, 'The late romantic and early metaphysical works', includes all the paintings and drawings from autumn 1908 to February 1919, and all the revivals, copies and variations of the metaphysical theme (about 70 works) documented to the period 1922-43. There are 7 Fascicle in Volume one. In this Fascicle 2 the chronological sequence of the works is strictly followed for 1912. The works from 1913 though, for greater legibility and clarity, are ordered in this sequence: drawings, portraits and nudes attributable to the first part of the year; compositions with Ariadne and relative drawings in chronological order; towers, chimneys and other compositions with relative drawings in chronological order; drawings relating to the summer-autumn 1913 period. Detailed reasons are given for the dating of the works, each of which is also discussed from the iconographic and stylistic point of view. These volumes are the most complete and up to date treatment of this mysterious and enigmatic artist, whose creative and intellectual story is one of the most gripping and important of the twentieth century.
