Un edificio non solo determina uno spazio interno, anzi una concatenazione di spazi interni, ma anche delimita un nuovo assetto dello spazio esterno. Stabilisce una relazione con la natura che lo circonda e le contrappone dialetticamente un nuovo assetto che è diverso da quello naturale ma che è in rapporto ad esso. Lo stesso tipo di relazione dialettica, lesistenza di un nuovo edificio stabilisce con la società. Dalla qualità della relazione che stabilisce si giudica la qualità delledi- ficio; a differenza di quanto avviene nelle arti figurative dove loggetto si giudica in se stesso, per quello che è e non per le relazioni che stabilisce con lambiente esterno - e soltanto in senso traslato per le influenze che esercita sulla società'.
