FURNITURE + ARCHITECTURE

Architects have been responsible for many of the modern furniture classics of the 20th century - Mies's Barcelona Chair, Eileen Gray's side table and Corb's chaise longue. Keen to exert their influence over every aspect of an interior's design, today's architects are also forging a prominent role in furniture design. This issue of Architectural Design takes a unique look at the relationship between architects and furniture design and furniture and architecture. There are features on some of the most important exponents of 'total design' of the 20th century - Max Bill, Ernö Goldfinger, Arne Jacobsen, Mies van der Rohe and Eero Saarinen - as well as those of the 21st: Alvaro Siza, John Pawson and David Adjaye. Other emerging designers featured include Alison Brooks, Tom Emerson of 6A, Jam and Gans & Jelacic while there is also an exploration of an aesthetic of 'found' design and an artistic and architectural exploration of the ordinary.
