50 years ago the world of architects changed forever - in January 1961 the first issue of DETAIL was published. Our 50-year anniversary has created the possibility in every edition this year for our editorial team to take a second look at groundbreaking projects that were published in DETAIL. In the anniversary edition, an especially successful synthesis of architecture, technique and landscape: the Olympic park in Munich - its structural alterations and its future are being closely examined as a potential location for the 2018 Olympics. In the online area, we take a closer look at the original layouts of the past decade. In our anniversary edition »50 Years of DETAIL«, wed like to talk less about ourselves and more about the global challenges that are facing modern and future structures. Editor-in-chief Christian Schittich paints the picture of the significance of construction details in architecture over the last decade, the modern and the near future and its impact on DETAIL in his contribution »Constructing Aesthetics«. Andres Lepik expands the field to include a global discussion: has the star architect burned out? Is it not the unnoticeable projects that will change our world more permanently in the future? The focus of the edition - in typical DETAIL style - is outstanding solutions for planning buildings. But this time weve freed ourselves from the usual topic structure and have analysed projects that - according to our editorial team - have paved the way through a specific contribution: with a social focus or a sustainable focus, with a new technological discovery, an innovative urban planning scheme or a successful aesthetic like an energetic renovation. Whether these projects are actually going to be long-lasting ones will be determined in another 50 years.
