The Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment recently launched a programme of education, research, and practice for the spatial design of the Netherlands, aimed at reinforcing the interaction between design and politics. The purpose of this book is to offer inspiration and an organising framework for that programme, based on history, reflection, policy, and, just as importantly, individual initiative. The book traces the history of spatial design and planning, its present status quo, and its ideals, systems and processes that have been strengthened through confrontation. This confrontation is seen as one of the cornerstones of a creative process that in turn not only fosters thoughtful deliberation, but also alternatives, eventualities and potentials.
