Brenda Colvin was a quietly professional and determined woman. Early in her career she visited the United States to see the new civic landscaping projects of designers like Frederick Law Olmstead. In England she transformed the surrounding landscapes of power stations, new reservoirs, industrial sites, new towns, factories, and national parks, while also working on many private gardens. Colvin's simple and natural planting style, her ecological approach, and her championship of the role and profession of the landscape architect have proved her lasting legacy. She was a founding member and president of the Landscape Institute, and her books "Land and Landscape" and "Trees for Town and Country" remain standard works. With full access to the archives of Colvin and Moggridge, author Trish Gibson draws on Colvin's personal notebooks and uses many of her previously unpublished photographs and plans for this book.
