Baccarat received its first royal commission in 1823. This event was the first in a long line of commissions for royalty and heads of state around the world. In 1855, Baccarat received its first gold medal at the Paris World's Fair. Around 1860, the company began trademarking its products. The mark was engraved on the base of the item. In the period between 1846 and 1849 Baccarat marked some of its finest crystal items with the letter B and the year the piece was created. A paperweight dated 1853 was found under the foundation stone of a Baccarat church damaged by a bomb in World War II. Crystal production expanded in this period, and the company gained a worldwide reputation for its high-quality glassware, chandeliers, and perfume bottles, among others.
