ANGLO-SAXON ARCHITECTURE (3 VOLS.)

This work is a complete catalogue of the Anglo-Saxon fabric surviving in the churches of England. Volumes I and II were originally published in hardback in 1965, with paperback editions appearing alongside the newly commissioned Volume III in the 1980s. Together, the three volumes provide an invaluable resource for the study of Anglo-Saxon architecture. Volume I, a short introduction, is a survey of pre-Conquest architectural features and the reasons for designating them as characteristically Anglo-Saxon. Volume II is the catalogue. In it each church is described in turn, in alphabetical order of parish names. Finally, the 1984 third volume was a landmark text in its field, taking the churches of Volumes I and II as its starting point, and establishing the logical basis for believing that churches do contain pre-Norman fabric.
