You may not remember his name, but the name of his latest project is certainly familiar: The Shard. As senior partner at Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW), Moolhuijzen was responsible for this remarkable London skyscraper. Despite not having his own practice, it seems his being willing to pay the price of never becoming well known publicly has its benefits. Evidence of corruption and nepotism in the country is overwhelming, yet it is difficult for the EU or any other international organization to get a hold of the situation. In response, the Bulgarian people took to the streets one year ago. They have been protesting ever since, though no longer on a daily basis. The endless energy and pride of Bulgarian citizens is reflected in the nation's young architects, who translate it into their profession. Slowly, this proactive group is finding ways to regain public territory while never losing sight of their independence. Section Bona fide brick Current trends and developments in cutting-edge building technologies and specific materials are the focus of Section, wherein A10 selects a single project for closer analysis, exploring the connections between concept and result, innovation and use, and beyond. In this instalment, we examine contemporary brick architecture, including several projects considered for the Brick Award 2014, an international competition initiated by Wienerberger. Among them is a model of public re-use, the Budafabriek in Kortijk, Belgium, by 51N4E. Tour guide All eyes on Venice: Ten pavilions to watch A year ago, when the president of the Venice Biennale announced the curator of its 14th edition, the majority of those in the architecture world were satisfied, convinced that it was a first-class choice. Not only is Rem Koolhaas one the most renowned international architects, he's also widely considered an influential theorist of contemporary architecture. But either his thematic ambitions have been misunderstood, or not considered inspiring enough. Many pavilions that stuck to the theme come no further than a simple survey of architecture, lacking in critical reflection. Creative and honest interpretations of the Koolhaasian manifesto are needed, something that this selection could very well deliver. Home New architects' residences Responsive mountain home by Pedevilla Architects (IT) Out of obscurity Buildings from the margins of modern history For his own house at Jongskollen (NO), architect Geir Grung combined Scandinavian restraint with Californian flair. The structure, finished in 1963 and perched on a hill a short car ride outside Oslo, combines a courtyard-style house with a cantilevered glass volume. A very public feud with local planning authorities ensured a lasting reputation for both the house and its architect.
