Since time immemorial water has exerted a special power of fascination on the human being: deep and inscrutable at the same time that it is calming and nourishing. In addition to gardens, water as a mani- foldly applicable design element has always played a central role in design for architects, landscape archi- tects and urban planners.After decades of virtual suppression the creative use with water is undergoing a much noticed Renaissance. Among them are the incorporation of existing water courses, the creation of urban places of relaxation and adventure, like fountains and water gardens, but also the climate modulation of urban spaces with water. Drawing on 50 projects, Waterscapes addresses the urban planning and design aspects of water today.
