Resumen del libro
La Revolución soviética alentó una experimentación plástica que buscaba unas formas que negaran el pasado y se ajustaran a las nuevas condiciones sociales. Los arquitectos se fijaron en las vanguardias artísticas e intentaron construir un código con el que proyectar la nueva arquitectura moderna y soviética. Sin embargo no encontraron el lenguaje anhelado hasta que descubrieron en el purismo abstracto de Le Corbusier y su visión de una ciudad mecanizada poblada por deportistas, junto con el baukunst centroeuropeo, que la modernidad estaba en la técnica y los nuevos usos.
Pero esto fue después de 1925, cuando Mélnikov viajó a París donde construyó el Pabellón Soviético para la Exposition des Arts Décoratifs y dibujó dos Garages pour 1.000 autos. El pabellón Rojo es un epígono de las investigaciones plásticas de la vanguardia cubo-futurista y con ellas formalizó un espacio dramático que expresaba bien las ambiciones soviéticas. El pabellón está a medio camino entre una instalación agit-prop, una escenografía total y un artefacto industrial. Mas sus fracturas cristalinas, la topografía de su sección y la transparencia imposible de sus fachadas se oscurecieron frente al pragmatismo moderno.
