Il volume è dedicato a Louis I. Kahn (1901-1974), uno dei più originali innovatori della cultura architettonica del Novecento. Nato in Estonia, Kahn fu attivo soprattutto negli Stati Uniti, unendo al lavoro di progettista anche l'attività didattica presso l'università di Yale.Ma Kahn fu anche un grande e arguto teorico, come dimostrano alcuni saggi quali Monumentalità, Ordine è o Ordine dello spazio e architettura, che testimoniano il suo incessante interrogarsi sul senso e sulla natura del fare architettonico, all'indomani dell'esaurirsi degli ideali che avevano costituito la sostanza della lezione dei "maestri". Il presente volume riunisce un'antologia di scritti - alcuni dei quali inediti in Italia - di diversa origine, dai primi anni trenta in poi: lettere, saggi pubblicati in volumi e riviste di architettura, conferenze, conversazioni con gli studenti.Gli scritti, illustrati con i progetti e disegni dell'architetto, sono introdotti dal testo critico di Maria Bonaiti
