La obra recoge y completa el contenido de las catorce conferencias del curso homónimo, organizado por la Real Academia de Ingeniería y la Institución Fernando el Católico. Es el primer volumen de una serie que pretende plantear análisis multidisciplinares sobre la materia común en períodos históricos sucesivos. El capítulo inicial efectúa un breve excurso lexicográfico; los restantes tratan tanto temas de carácter general como otros específicos de las diversas actividades técnicas.
