Brutalist Speculations and Flights of Fancy is based around six of Sheffields famous and not so famous brutalist buildings. Twenty artists and writers from Sheffield and Berlin were invited to contribute to a book which contains speculations, proposals, enquiries, and challenges founded on these six buildings. The project considers the position that these buildings hold now and speculate on their possible futures. These extraordinary buildings are sometimes forgotten, often reviled, loved, misunderstood, and contested. Including texts by architectural theorists and writers: Owen Hatherley (journalist and author of A Guide to The New Ruins of Modernism); Steve Pile, professor of Human Geography, Open University and author of Real Cities: Modernity, Space and the Phantasmagorias of City Life; and Jane Rendell, Director of Architectural Research at the Bartlett, UCL and author of Art and Architecture.
